Physical Description Kotyar is tall and wiry, with a lean build that comes more from years of physical work than any particular interest in keeping fit. His features are angular and a little worn, whether by time, life, or just this week's shift rota, helped along by the stubble he usually keeps and dark blond hair that rarely looks completely tidy. His brown eyes are expressive, and irritation or disbelief tends to show quickly in an arched eyebrow or an eye-roll, while amusement usually comes with a crooked smile and a laugh. As a Haliian, he has the familiar forehead ridges and nose ridge.

Personality & Traits

Personality Overview Kotyar’s always described as a bit of a chancer, not necessarily because he does anything wrong but because he has a way of always having a cheeky smile, a story and then some implausible reason why he had to get his hands into a console. He enjoys being around people, has a flirtatious side and just in general enjoys life. He is a risk taker in general, never with the crew but with himself. He enjoys things that get his heart pumping. He can be seen as being unserious, but when push comes to shove he will do anything he can for his ship and crew. He might just try and crack a joke or something while doing it. While his species are telepathic, he doesn’t own a canar and quite likes that no one can reach out, touch his cheek and know exactly what he is feeling.
Ambitions Kotyar's bigger ambitions all revolve around working, ideally cementing his specialisms, or just being a go-to person for weird and wonderful engineering bits. And not being bored.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Kotyar’s biggest strength is knowing starships, how they are put together and how to keep them like that. He’s loyal to his ship and his friends.

Weaknesses: Kotyar’s biggest weakness is that he is a risk taker, and can be really unserious with it. It makes it difficult to promote someone who wouldn’t think twice about crossing some dodgy-looking bridge to repair it for someone else.
Hobbies & Interests Kotyar still loves parkour and keeps fit with doing it. He is also into card games, enjoys a bit of sleight of hand and stories. He likes to have a drink with friends, or make friends over one. He also enjoys the company of people and is known to be a bit of a flirt.

Medical History

Past Injuries Kotyar suffered from radiation burns in 2351, when during the construction of the USS Sicily, the Dilithium chamber had a breach. Kotyar and 5 other workers were exposed to radiation. After two weeks in sickbay, Kotyar returned to duty.

He also suffered from two broken ribs, a broken arm and hip in 2363, during an away team mission when he was pushed off a balcony by a drunken local. It was a second contact.
Known Allergies None
Preexisting Medical Conditions None

Personal History Kotyar Ral Avran was born on Halii, the fourth son of Avran Ral Abryn and Saani Karyn. He grew up in a culture where family and honesty about your emotions mattered, down to the language leaving space for people to connect one on one. As an empathic and telepathic species, the Haliians valued both honesty and privacy. Connecting to a person in such a way was seen as intimate, not something strangers did.

And into this world Kotyar took his first steps. He was a curious child who liked taking things apart and occasionally put them together. As the youngest of the boys, he often found himself running after his brothers, trying to act like they did. Some may call him cheeky, or a chancer, but underneath the bravado of a boy younger than those around him was a real enjoyment of the moment. He wasn’t fearless…just less cautious than others.

As he got older, he found his own interests. There was a streak in him that liked danger, so he started doing parkour. He enjoyed being around people, and when he realised that he didn’t care about gender as much as the person, it opened up a lot more chances for him to make friends…so to speak. Of course, even with all that, he still loved taking things apart and putting them together. What had been toys when he was little became replicators, or even engines as he got older. When he was 17, he decided that he’d enlist in Starfleet. His brothers were all settling down already, focused on building their own families and the house in the valley had become crowded. And…truth was, Kotyar didn’t see himself settling down, having kids, raising them in the house of his ancestors.

Instead he saw himself repairing bigger things. Things that may otherwise kill you. He saw himself working with Starships. And while Halii had its own fleet, its own explorers…they were members of the Federation which meant that Kotyar had the chance to enlist in Starfleet. And he did. On the birthday of his maturity, he wandered into a Starfleet office, head still swimming from the celebrations…and signed his name.

Of course, he then had two weeks of tests, exams and everything to make sure he passed the requirements. But that would never be the story that Kotyar would tell with great enthusiasm. And even more when he said he knew exactly what he wanted to do…Engineering. And he was lucky, because it was what he ended up doing…but not without some issues. He was very good at taking things apart and then putting them together…creatively. Differently. Not according to spec. And that did not always work out in his best interests. But he did finish, did graduate and became a crewman.

He started out on Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. He was more or less treated like an apprentice and an extra set of hands and back, helping install the warp cores, coolant lines…whatever was needed. It was hard work, with long hours especially coming up to inspection time. Admirals and Captains alike liked to see their ships finished on time. It taught Kotyar a lot, specifically about teamwork…and also that there was something special about being there when a warp core was heated up for the first time, hoping that if something went wrong that you could shut it down in time.

Kotyar spent five years there before he was transferred to the USS Daedalus, where he worked across both Engineering and Operations. After that, a stint on the USS Spinoza gave him a chance to be part of and lead the Damage Control Team, as well as his duties as an Engineer. Kotyar’s career as an enlisted stayed in a way where he wasn’t a genius, or a boy wonder, but he could think outside the box a bit and was very good at repairing things. He also had a great understanding not just about ship’s engineering, but all the things that happen when a starship is built. He understood the different layers of the hull, the treatment of each, where the wires usually had difficulties due to layout…he understood ships.

And would happily entertain anyone who asked about it. But Kotyar also enjoyed being an enlisted, and being around people. He usually had a good story to tell, a near-fatal brush with technology or stupidity and held the USS Erasmus’s record for getting from engineering to the bridge without use of the turbolift (but only because he knew the layout, tricks and those he was up against were newly minted Ensigns).

In 2369 he was transferred to the USS Thunderbird as an Engineer.
